Americanah tells the story of Ifemelu and Obinze, two young Nigerians who fall in love while growing up in Lagos under a military-ruled Nigeria. Ifemelu moves to the United States, where she experiences life as an African immigrant in America, grappling with identity, race, and belonging. Obinze, on the other hand, ends up in the UK as an undocumented immigrant, facing a different set of challenges. After many years, Ifemelu and Obinze reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria and must confront how both they—and their country—have changed.
