In a dystopian future society divided into five factions — Candor (honest), Abnegation (selfless), Dauntless (brave), Amity (peaceful), and Erudite (intelligent) — every 16-year-old must choose the faction they will commit to for life.  Beatrice “Tris” Prior comes from Abnegation, but she surprises everyone when she picks Dauntless during the Choosing Ceremony.
 
During initiation, Tris goes through tough physical tests and psychological simulations. She struggles with fear, identity, and trust as she makes new friends — and uncovers disturbing secrets about herself.
 
One of her deepest secrets: she may be Divergent — someone who doesn’t fit cleanly into any one faction. That puts her in great danger.
