Tells the tragic story of Michael Henchard, a man whose impulsive actions and stubborn pride shape his life’s rise and fall.

The story begins with Henchard drunkenly selling his wife and infant daughter at a country fair. Years later, having become a wealthy and respected grain merchant, he keeps this dark secret hidden.

When his wife and daughter mysteriously return, Henchard’s life becomes complicated. He struggles with jealousy, guilt, and the consequences of his past mistakes. His relationship with Elizabeth-Jane (his daughter) and his interactions with others, including the charming farmer Donald Farfrae, lead to a series of conflicts and betrayals.

Henchard’s pride and inability to forgive ultimately lead to his downfall. The novel explores themes of fate, identity, and the impact of one’s choices.
