Set in early 19th-century England during industrial unrest. It follows Shirley Keeldar, a wealthy and independent woman, and Caroline Helstone, a poor and gentle friend. Their lives intersect with the Moore brothers—Robert, a passionate mill owner, and Louis, a sensitive tutor. The novel explores themes of class conflict, workers’ rights, gender roles, and personal identity against the backdrop of social and economic change.
