In 1940, at the age of sixteen, Gaëlle witnesses the German occupation of France and the subsequent atrocities committed against her Jewish friend, Rebekah Feldmann, and her family. Motivated by a desire to make amends for her perceived inability to protect Rebekah, Gaëlle joins the Resistance. She takes on perilous missions, including smuggling Jewish children to safety and executing a secret plan to protect France's artistic heritage. However, as the war ends, Gaëlle is falsely accused of collaboration and flees to Paris.
In Paris, she reinvents herself, becoming a renowned Dior model, marrying, and raising a family. Despite her success, the shadow of her past looms over her. Years later, her granddaughter, a respected political journalist, embarks on a journey to clear Gaëlle's name and ensure her wartime heroism is recognized. The novel culminates in Gaëlle receiving France's highest honor, the Legion d’Honneur, for her bravery and sacrifices during the war.
