Set in the late 1930s, The Giver of Stars tells the story of Alice Wright, a young Englishwoman who moves to rural Kentucky after marrying Bennett Van Cleve. There, she joins a group of women — known as the “Pack Horse Librarians” — who ride on horseback through mountainous terrain to deliver books and spread literacy to isolated communities. Among them is Margery O’Hare, a bold and troubled woman determined to bring the joy of reading to the underserved. As Alice and Margery grow closer and their friendship deepens, they face social prejudice, physical danger, and the threat of the town turning against them. The novel is about courage, friendship, the power of books, and women’s empowerment.
