Set in a remote, frozen island known as the Isle of Bears, the story follows Marv Jackson, who bears a crescent-shaped scar from a polar bear attack he survived as a child. Though the traumatic event is considered legendary, Marv suspects that the commonly told version of what happened isn’t whole truth.
 
His memories and dreams are haunted by visions of a mysterious skating girl and a magical polar bear. Then a traveling carnival arrives, featuring a girl and a bear act. Marv is certain there is more to this act than entertainment — and possibly a connection to his past. Soon Marv, the girl (Tuesday), and a bear named Promise are drawn into danger, revelations, and an urgent escape across the icy wilderness.
