The Vanishing Half follows the lives of the Vignes twin sisters, who grow up in a small Black community in the Deep South of the United States. At 16 they run away together, but as adults their lives diverge drastically: one sister lives with her Black daughter in the same town she tried to escape, while the other secretly passes as white, distancing herself from her past. Though they live in very different worlds, their fates remain intertwined through years of lies, abandonment, and love. The novel explores themes of identity, family, race, and the long, complicated echoes of one’s roots.
