Dombey and Son follows the story of Paul Dombey, a wealthy merchant obsessed with having a son to inherit his business and continue his family name. When his son, Paul Jr., is born, Dombey hopes for the boy to carry on his legacy, but the child is weak and soon dies, devastating the family.
Dombey turns cold and distant, especially toward his daughter, Florence, whom he neglects despite her deep love for him. The novel explores the consequences of pride, the pursuit of wealth, and the emotional neglect within families.
As the story unfolds, Florence's kindness and loyalty contrast with her father’s harshness. Various other characters—friends, servants, and rivals—bring depth to the narrative, highlighting themes of love, loss, betrayal, and redemption.
In the end, Paul Dombey’s pride leads to personal ruin, but he finds a chance for forgiveness and emotional healing.
